Welcome to The Weekly Edit. A free weekly column where I collate the best of new arrivals, outfit inspo for the week ahead and the latest in trending style. Sent weekly on a Monday evening.
Welcome to the very first edition of The Weekly Edit! If you’ve been following my Instagram for a while, you will know that I would usually post a version of this newsletter on stories and posts throughout the week. Lately, I feel like Instagram has turned into one big sponsored ad, and when it’s not, it’s a really bad TikTok. Every time I log on, I am inundated with random videos and viral reels completely unrelated to the accounts I choose to follow. And tbh, I’m really getting over it.
I miss the simpler days where your feed was a chronological timeline of your friends brunch, duck faced selfies and stylised flatlays we used to think were itttt. Now, I feel like it’s quickly turning into another Facebook where content creators are spewing whatever content they can just for viral likes and engagement. While yes it can be entertaining, there does comes a point where it becomes sensory overload. We’re not designed to be overstimulated this much. Plus at the end of the day, how much are we actually remembering of what we see once we scroll past it, and is it really adding any value to our lives? Personally, I just can’t keep up with all of the noise.
(Kind of?) fun fact: my personal Instagram is the 3rd account I’ve created since I joined instagram in 2012. I am notorious for deactivating and dipping when it gets too much for my mental health, and starting all over again when I feel ready to jump back on the platform (digital clean slates feel sooo good). I’ve just made this public so you can follow me there too and get to know me a bit better. Right now, there’s not a lot on there, but I have a Canon G7X on the way so you best believe I’ll be posting more!
I have been quiet over the last few weeks because I needed to take time out to reassess what I want Alexa’s Edit to be. At it’s core, my intention for this page was to sift through the noise of the fashion industry to bring you the new product launches, style guides and fashion trends that are actually worth knowing about, having worked in the industry as a buyer and in product/sales for so long. Lately, I have felt extremely uninspired to post. I feel like I am just adding to the noise of Instagram, not synthesising it. I’ve been looking for another way to bring this content to you in a way that also felt right for me (if you want a little giggle, I did try my hand at TikTok for a week… it was an immediate no. Video content is just not for me), so here we are!
Substack feels right for me creatively at this point in time and I am beyond excited to bring my edit to you here in a different, more aligned format. I am a creative and I also love to write. My dream when I was in my early twenties was to become a blogger, so I guess this is me taking my shot at it now. Substack also allows me to share more insight into why I post the products I post, as well as context behind collections and products that only someone in the industry would know. I also want to write about deeper topics relating to fashion and career - not just sharing what outfits I think are cool or what’s trending. With Substack, you can also access my archive of posts at any time, which I prefer way more than a story that expires in 24 hours. I hope you’ll stick around for it!
So, what now?
I will still be posting outfit inspo and some edits on instagram, but this will be my main content source moving forward. So.. please subscribe! It’s completely free, and all of my posts will be a good mix of both free and paid content (mostly free though!)
If you want to become a paid subscriber, you’ll be getting additional edits and trending deep dives, as well as access to a paid inbuilt group chat on Substack (which I am SO excited for - we can chat about everything from sale finds I come across, outfit help and Zendaya’s press tour looks in real time!) For now though, everything will be free so you can get a feel of what this content will look like.
Also! I have decided to make my platform The Edit available to access for all of my paid Substack subscribers! If you don’t know what this is, The Edit is a platform I’ve built where I’ve curated thousands of options across bridal, events and now trending products (The Trending Edit is launching there too this week in conjunction with my posts on here). It’s such a great resource, and now you can get access to it automatically when you subscribe to the paid list (you’ll receive an email with the login details).
If you love my work and have been following me for a while, please consider subscribing! This is the best way to support me and is only $7 a month (it’s basically like shouting me a coffee each month while I give you the rundown on all things fashion!) It is a labour of love but at the end of the day, is still a labour. Whether you’re a paid subscriber or not, THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for following me here! And for reading all of this. Seriously, I really appreciate you.
Now enough from me, let’s get into what you really came here for.
Best of new arrivals
My top picks of what’s new and trending across retailers and brands.
Branded new arrivals have been a bit average over the last couple of weeks, but there are some good pieces popping up here and there. There hasn’t been a collection that has really stood out to me this week, so instead I’ve curated some standout pieces I’ve seen instead. Let’s get into it.
1. Henne - Isolde Trench Coat
This trench is an updated version of Henne’s best selling Otto trench. I love this video of Nadia Bartel explaining why they chose to make the updates. In buying and on the brand side, this BTS is something that we are fortunate enough to have access to from the design team. Brands rarely translate this level of insight to their customers, so I love the fact that Nadia has done this. It gives this piece a bit more context and has definitely influenced me to purchase it. I love that they have made this longer than their previous trench (I’m a longline coat girl through and through), so this is the perfect addition to my Autumn coat collection.
2. Mossman - Bexley Shirt // Bexley Jean
Beyonce really said denim on denim on denim, and brands are coincidentally releasing exactly just that. Denim on denim is never out of style, but it has definitely picked up momentum again recently. This new all black denim drop from Mossman is set to be an Autumn workwear uniform. I’d style this shirt untucked with black or white heeled boots for an effortless comfy/cool look.
3. P.E. Nation x The Iconic - Physical Trackpants // Sweatshirt // Tank
Okay, P.E. Nation! This one may be a little bias of me because I was working in this team at The Iconic when this collaboration was in design, but I love what the P.E. & Iconic team has done with this collection (go girls!). Moving away from the bold branding and into a more Adanola-esque, collegiate aesthetic. Loveee. This entire set (including the tank) will be my new WFH uniform.
4. SNDYS - Romi Linen Dress
For all the girls lucky enough to be heading off to Europe this summer, SNDYS newest collection features some really affordable linen basics. A standout for me is this white mini dress, which is perfect to wear with sneakers for a day of sightseeing and slides or thong heels for dinner.
5. Natalie Rolt - Allora Gown
Attention all bride-to-be’s and birthday girls. This dress is SO gorgeous for a lead up bridal event or formal birthday dinner. I would even wear it to a wedding as a guest. It reminds me of Helsa’s signature skirt but with a more subtle twist. It’s currently on waitlist only, but I have signed up for a stock alert and will post it in the chat when it becomes available. If you need it now, some dress rental sites already have it available!
6. Brie Leon - Everyday Mini Baguette
This collection has been out for a little while now, but I just found out that this bag (in gold and black) are made out of Corn Leather from non-food grade corn husks in an attempt to reduce Brie Leon’s environmental impact. It made me love this bag even more than I already do.
7. Zara - Bracelet // Ballet Flats // Shoulder Bag // Cargo Skort
Top left: Here are just a few things I have my eye on from Zara this week, starting with this Tiffany Bone Cuff lookalike. Big cuffs are back in fashion and for Autumn, I love the idea of styling them over a long sleeve bodysuit and a mini skirt for a date night look.
Top right: I’m also loving these ballet flats with a harder sole on the bottom. As you probably know, a lot of ballet flats are not that practical in reality. These are more structured and look like they could actually be worn when it’s raining out. I also love the elastic at the top, very à la The Row.
Bottom left: I’m not ashamed to admit that a few of the bags I reach for everyday are actually from Zara. The only bags I’ve ever had an issue with them is anything flimsy or beaded (they’ve broken almost instantly) - so I stick to more structured shoulder bags. I love the shape of this one as a staple, everyday shoulder bag if you’re looking for something unbranded.
Bottom right: If you’re lucky enough to be going to Coachella or anywhere else this festival season, I am still into all things cargo. This skort styled with buckle biker boots and a black or burgundy tank is a cute and comfy outfit idea. Let me know if you want to see a dedicated post on more festival outfit inspo in the comments!
This week in outfits
Outfit inspo for the week ahead.
Shopping day/casual day in the office
Mary jane flats with socks is my latest obsession. I am loving them as an alternative to socks and loafers. This outfit is my current go-to when I want to look a touch more formal than just a business shirt.
Running Errands
Not fully on board with animal print yet? Can I tempt you with these Adidas x Wales Bonner sambas perhaps? I personally am such a fan of sporadic leopard print lately to bring a basic outfit to life, and these sneakers are the perfect something to do just that.
Date night
When it doubt, an all black ensemble is my absolute go-to for all date nights and dinners with friends. I looove this wireframe bustier top from Pixie Market sold at David Jones (so stoked we have a retailer that stocks it here in Aus!). These jeans are my go-to denim staple for dinners and date nights. I absolutely love them and always get compliments when I wear them - my only advice is to size down if you want them to be mid-rise instead of low rise. They’re also really long for me (I’m 5’2) and I always have to wear some sort of heel with them. Another thing to keep in mind!
If you want to see my attempt at a grwm, I am wearing the jeans here:
WFH
Unfortunately, these CSB pants are sold out in many sizes at the moment but best believe I have my email alerts on for a restock. This outfit is my ideal comfy WFH situation. I’m also obsessed with how oversized and cosy this 1/4 zip jumper is.
Save these outfits
Want to save these outfits for future use? I post everything on Instagram as well as my website where these links forever live. Newsletter subscribers see them first though, so they’ll be posted on other platforms throughout the week!
Saved style
A roundup of my favourite looks this week from my saved folder.
Kendall Jenner - Rodarte Dress
Kendall Jenner wore a stunning dress from Rodarte’s bridal collection for Easter celebrations with the family. This is such a gorgeous engagement party or rehearsal dinner option. Plus super on trend (still) with the velvet bow detailing. Love love love this look!
Emma Leger - Socks & Ballet Flats
Emma Leger may just be one of my favourite fashion influencers. Her style is simple but elevated, which makes it easy to replicate in your everyday wardrobe. This look specifically has been living rent free in my mind. I’m obsessed with the socks and ballet flats trend, and I love how she has brought it all together and kept it clean with this beige look.
Gigi Hadid - 90’s Nostalgia
Gigi really leaned into the 90s nostalgia a couple of weeks ago with this vintage Mickey Mouse crewneck sweatshirt. On a semi-related note, my sister sent me this reel of the old Disney stores (who remembers!?) - am I sensing a collective Mickey Mouse comeback or is it just me? I think it’s just me. Also, this may be an unpopular opinion but I love them together!!!
Tyla - NYC Press Day
Tyla is on my style radar, and this is one of my favourite looks her and stylist Katie Qian have done. I love the subtle diamanté jeans and the pleated boxer brief layering/shirt detail. I can’t wait to see what else they create together!
Nistan Raiter - Leopard Jeans
I took a trip down south this weekend and I was surprised but also loving the amount of leopard print jeans I was seeing. I am fairly certain these ones Nitsan is wearing are from Aliexpress (I can’t find where she linked them), but similar versions are these Ganni jeans (currently sold out), and these Lioness jeans (a much cheaper option). Are you into this trend?
Style & shopping tips
I love this video from @twobrokechicks all about mindfulness around impulse shopping. When I had my own startup and was quite literally broke (I poured my life savings into it), it made me realise just how much I used to spend on impulse purchases and things I didn’t actually need. When it came time to me having to wear whatever was in my wardrobe (because I was on a shopping ban for anything other than my business), it clearly illuminated my impulse spending habits on silly sale pieces instead of pieces that had longevity. If there’s one spending lesson I’m grateful for, it’s this.
One my favourite comments under this video is ‘if it’s not a f*ck yes, it’s a no’, which is another motto I’ve learned to cultivate. If it’s a maybe, the next step I do is sleep on it for at least a few days. It’s so easy to get caught up in the emotions of fomo, especially around sale time, but having the awareness to step back and re-assess your cart is such a powerful skill when it comes to impulse shopping for things you probably don’t need.
